hatch
A person says hatch when they mean a door in a floor, ceiling, or ship deck. They also use it for an opening that lets light or air in, or for the moment an egg breaks and a chick comes out.
What a model may hear
- Hatch pattern fill computer-aided design (CAD)
- A model may apply a crosshatch texture to a drawing or assume the user wants a pattern of parallel lines
- Thread spawning programming (Python, Rust)
- A model may write code that creates child processes or green threads, thinking hatch means to spawn or launch
- Hatchery package manager Python tooling
- A model may assume the user wants to build, version, or publish a Python project using the Hatch tool
- 3D print slicing additive manufacturing
- A model may set infill density or top-layer pattern, confusing hatch with the internal structure of a printed part
Where people and models part ways
“Hatch this area”
Meant: Draw a door or opening on the plan
May be taken as: Fill the space with a crosshatch pattern or apply CAD hatch fill
Say instead: “Draw a rectangular opening like a floor hatch on the blueprint”
“Hatch the new plan”
Meant: Come up with or start the new plan
May be taken as: Run Python Hatch to build a project or spawn a new thread
Say instead: “Draft or develop the new plan from the beginning”
“Let it hatch first”
Meant: Wait for the idea or project to develop naturally
May be taken as: Execute a hatch command in code or trigger a process spawn
Say instead: “Give it time to develop before the next step”
“The eggs are hatching”
Meant: Literal eggs breaking open with chicks
May be taken as: Assume a metaphor for system boot or container startup
Say instead: “The chicken eggs in the incubator are breaking open”
Tips
- Say floor hatch or deck hatch if you mean an opening, not a pattern
- Use spawn or create if you want code to start a new thread
- Say develop or draft if you mean coming up with a plan, not build with tools
- Add chicken or egg before hatch if you mean the literal animal event
- Specify CAD fill or crosshatch if you want the pattern in a drawing
Often confused with
- hatchery
- a place for raising young, not a build tool
- crosshatch
- the pattern itself, not the opening
- spawn
- always means create a process in code
- launch
- start a program, not emerge from an egg
- incubate
- keep warm until ready, not break open
- hatchback
- a car door style, unrelated
